both music and boise are caused by vibrations.
music- created using specific pitches and sound quality and by following a regular pattern.
noise- the most common kind of sound; has no set pattern aned no definite pitch.
if all the frequencies of noise are present in equal amplitude, the result is called white noise
most objects have a natural frequency of vibration
the bicration of the guitar and the air inside it is called a forced vibration, and this makes the sound of the string louder.
if the soudnt hat reaches an object is at the same frequency as the natural frequency of the object, the object will begin to vibrate at this frequency.
^^ resonance- that type of vibration ^^^^^
quality- describes the differences among sounds of the same pitch and loudness.
all sounds are produced by vibrations of matter, but most objects bibrate at more than one frequency.
The tone produced when the string vibrates along its entire length is called the fundamental frequency.
overtones have frequencies that are multiples of the fundamental frequency.
the highest note in an octave has exactly twice the frequency of the lowest note in that octave.
interference- the ability of two or more waves to combine and form a new wave.
reverberation- produced by many reflections of sound
acoustics- the study of sound
an anechoic chamber is designed to deaden all reverberations.
light, readio waves, and microwaves are all examples of electromagnetic waves.
electromagnetic waves are transverse waves produced by the motion of electrically charged particles.
electromagnetic radiation- the radiate form the particles.
the transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves is called radiation.
elctromagnetic waves do not needd a medium to transfer energy.
They can travel through a vacuum- empty space- at a speed of 300 000 km/s.
the light from the stars is one type of electromagnetic waves.
these waves travel slwer when the pass through any type of matter, but they still travel much faster than sound or water waves.
all electromagnetic waves travel at the same speed in a vacuum, but their frequencies and wavelengths may vary.
the shorter the wavelength of a wave, the higher its frequency.
scientists have observed that radiation not only carries energy, but also has momentum.
this means that electromagnetic radiation may have particlelike behavior as well as wavelike behavior.
in 1905 albert einstein hypothesized that light is composed of tiny particles. these tiny particle- like bundles of radiation are called photons
photons with the highest energy correspond to light with the highest frequency.
you cant sense radio waves
radio waves- have long wavelengths and low frequencies
thus, radio waves have the lowest photon energy
modulation- the process of varying radio waves
light images, computer information, and music can also be used to modulate radio waves.
microwaves- radio waves with the highest frequency and energy
infrared radiation- has a wavelength slightly longer than visible light, as you can see by its location on the electromagnetic spectrum
warm objects give off more intrared radiation than do cool objects
a thermomogram is produced by measuring the ingrared radiation given off by different body parts.
visible radiation- (light) the only part of the elctromagnetic spectrum you can see.
ultraviolet radiation- has a higher frquency than visible light, so its photons are more energetic and have greater penetrating power than photons of bisble light.
X rays- have a shorter wavelength and higher frequency than ultraviolet radiation.
