According to Zar, as detailed in his interview found here:
- Typically he does not have a clear image of what he wants to paint when he begins.
- Most often, he either has no idea at all what he is going to do, or he has a "vague concept".
- According to him, his best work is done when he "has the freedom to allow the painting to develop", that is "where my strength lies, to be able to go with the flow and to recognize and build upon the happy accidents". This is a fun way to paint for him. For him, "the creative process is where I find my paintings".
