Does anyone know the reason for the "crib" in crib sheets? Just curious.--190.39.202.28 23:08, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, a crib (in this context) originally referred specifically to "a translation of a classic or other work in a foreign language, for the illegitimate use of students" - ie you're supposed to be translating the text yourself but you use someone else's translation to help you. Dates from the mid-1800s. Around the same period 'cribbing' also meant theft, which might be the etymological basis for it.. Caitifty (talk) 18:36, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

I think that is relevant for Wikipedia, but maybe not on this page. It could be considered a form of cheating, but not so much a form of cheat sheet. 216.36.186.2 (talk) 13:35, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Including decorative cheat sheets / posters
I added some text about commercial cheat sheets and how they often end up on people's walls because they're colourful, & gave an example of a phlebotomy tube poster. However I don't know if referencing external commercial works is ok in wikipedia, so I'm hardly going to be offended if someone deletes or heavily edits it.. I came across this page while trying to find web references to "Crib Notes", which I didn't find any good definitive uses of in either the topic of a web site or even non-web based resources. To my knowledge another standard colloquial reference to this is "Crib Notes" but I don't consider the connotation to be for "cheating" as much as some kind of legitimate reference material. I don't have access to OED but I would really surprised if it didn't include this usage. As far as references go again since this is basically a well understand colloquial topic I'm not sure what references can be made. If it helps any a quick search on nytimes.com will find numerous instances of the USAGE of the term "Crib Notes", several times as tongue-in-cheek headlines, and a few times by the writers in the articles.

A section on the best methods of making the sheets would be good. Including techniques for packing as much information into as small a space - software, writing techniques, etc...
