[edit] Featured article

Suggested articles should have a clear connection with Cheshire. They should give a reasonably full treatment of the subject with references and images. No stubs or unreferenced articles, please.

Chester city walls is a nice article on an important subject, but the 2nd image is a bit poor; it might be better to wait until really good images are available. Espresso Addict 15:40, 19 August 2007 (UTC)
But that's hardly typical Cheshire! Peter I. Vardy 15:37, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
Yes, I suppose 'historically part of Lancashire' isn't ideal! Runcorn would of course be possible once the FA stuff is out of the way. Espresso Addict 15:57, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
Actually, this is Start class so perhaps not the best choice at present. Espresso Addict (talk) 18:03, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Featured biography

The person suggested should have a clear connection with Cheshire. The biography should give a reasonably full treatment of the subject with references and preferably at least one free use image. No stubs or unreferenced articles, please.

  • Articles satisfying the criteria in this category are few and far between, and even Joseph Priestley's connections with Cheshire are thin (a short time in Nantwich, then in Warrington which was at that time in Lancashire). The only other one I have found is Thomas Brassey — and that's a bit incestuous as I wrote much of it!). Peter I. Vardy 14:10, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
He was among my second choices, largely because he's rather less well known; others in there were Randolph Caldecott (not adequately referenced), Robert Spear Hudson (businessman) (bit short, lead needs work & no image of him), Thomas Hazlehurst (chapel builder) (fairly short & not all that notable), Hall Caine (the Manx stuff is a bit offputting in context) & Sir John Brunner, 1st Baronet (bit short & could do with more illustration). I had a few third choices which definitely needed work, too. Perhaps the WP should concentrate on trying to get a few of these up to a good B-class, so as not to prevent monthly portal updates? The number of biographies that are tagged by the project are few, though, so there may well be others to be found, trawling through Cheshire cats &c. Espresso Addict 15:34, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
Agree with your comments (although Thomas Brassey deserves to be better known). Hall Caine's contact is very tenuous; born in Runcorn and moved out (forever) soon afterwards. I'm gradually adding to John Brunner so hope to work that one up in time. Peter I. Vardy 15:41, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
The tenuous connection thing is a problem with many. William Gaskell was born & is buried in Cheshire but he's so inextricably linked with Manchester, I'd be chary of suggesting him. William Bowman needs a lot of work (I have many references on him), but was only born here and moved when he was a very young (don't have date). Espresso Addict 16:07, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

  • The Chester cathedral medallions are not usable for copyright reasons (coins count as 3D artworks); the Bridgewater canal picture is copyright ambiguous in the absence of information on the artist. Espresso Addict 12:34, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
  • I've discovered that the 19th century canal engraving is by Hedley Fitton (1859-1929)[1] so copyright should be OK; the trouble is that personally I don't like the picture much, except to demonstrate the horrors of the industrial revolution in Runcorn – so oppose. Peter I. Vardy 13:15, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
  • Do you know of any better industrial revolution images? Espresso Addict 13:23, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
  • Yes, the one in the Widnes article (but not sure about the copyright). Peter I. Vardy 16:24, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
  • I suspect that one wouldn't be justifiable without more information. Espresso Addict 18:34, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

  • The Grindley Brook locks isn't the best Cheshire locks photo I've seen around Geograph; I'll see if I can look out a few other suggestions. Espresso Addict 12:34, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
May I suggest:
I found it on Flickr and added it to Bollington straight away! -- Jza84 · (talk) 23:07, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

--(self-noms) All in Nantwich. I could provide a higher-res image for the second suggestion (possibly with the annoying sign airbrushed out). Suggested by Espresso Addict (talk) 02:31, 1 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Did You Know?

Suggested facts should relate to articles with a clear connection with Cheshire. They need to be brief and pique the readers' interest. They should preferably be referenced within the article. DYKs don't need to have been featured on the main page, although suitable articles should be suggested there as well. Old articles can be suggested but new or recently expanded articles will be preferred. No very short stubs, please.
