Illustration of the historic arms of the (pre-1974) city of Chester, England, from "Our Own Country" vol. 2, London & New York, Cassell, 1890. Coloured from shading-coded original by contributor.

Chester's arms are said to date from AD 1283, which would make them the earliest civic arms in England. The left half represents the Monarch, the right the Earls of Chester (see Hope, W H St John "English Municipal Heraldry", Archaeological Journal, vol 52, 1895, pp173-97)
