The club was originally founded in 1946 as Sefton and commenced by fielding a junior side in the Western Suburbs District competition. The club became known as Chester Hill in 1948 when the club was moved from the Western Suburbs competition to the Parramatta competition. The club began fielding a senior side in the A-Grade Parramatta competition in 1949 having won the Parramatta District B-Grade competition in 1948.

The club found the move into senior competition difficult and did not enter a side in the 1950 season, moving into the Canterbury-Bankstown District to field junior level sides from 1951 onwards. In 1971 the club adopted a Hornet as its mascot.

Chester Hill was admitted to the NSWRL Jim Beam Cup for the 2007 season and adopted the Rhino moniker for its top side, with the Chester Hill Junior club remaining known as the Hornets.
