Cherupuzha is a panchayath in Payyannur block of Kannur district, Kerala, India. Cherupuzha is an up and coming center of trade and commerce. Located about 30 kilometers to the east of Payyannur, Cherupuzha was built by the immigrants from the southern district of Kerala, especially, Kottayam. Cherupuzha, until the mass migration in the 1970s and 80’s of hardworking farmers from the southern districts, was little more than a sleepy little village.
The migrants brought in a hard working attitude that was accepted whole-heartedly by the natives. The result: the proliferation of cash crops like rubber, pepper, ginger, and cashew, which alleviated poverty. The immigrants also brought in a strong desire to better the lives of their children through education, resulting in the establishment of many fine educational institutions.
Cherupuha in the 1970’s had an upper primary school (JMUP School), a church (St. Mary’s Church), couple of little nursing homes (St. Sebastians and Konduparmbil) , and a musjid. Today it boasts of well known educational institutions (St. Mary High School, St. Joseph’s Higher Secondary School) and hospitals in addition to graceful places of worship like the reconstructed St. Mary’s Forona Church, Ayyappa Temple and Juma Musjid. In the mean time, the city has grown by leaps and bounds. By the late 1980’s Cherupuzha became the nerve center of trade and education east of Payyannur. It is well connected by road to Payyannur, Alakkode, Pulingome, Chittarikkal, and beyond.
