Cherry Ghost is an English indie rock band led by Simon Aldred (born September 1975 in Bolton). Lead singer Simon Aldred went to Canon Slade School in Bolton. Cherry Ghost began in Bolton in 2005, first as an alias for Simon as a solo artist, then slowly morphing into a full band. They currently enjoy considerable airplay on BBC Radio 2. Their debut album, Thirst for Romance, entered the UK album charts at #7.

The band has supported Amy Winehouse, Polytechnic, Fields, The Spinto Band, and Crowded House, and was handpicked by Manic Street Preachers as their support band for their December 2007 tour.[1] James Dean Bradfield, lead singer/guitarist of Manic Street Preachers, said that Thirst for Romance was his favorite album of 2007.[2] The Manics handpicked Cherry Ghost as their supporting band In September 2007, Cherry Ghost was nominated for "best new act" in the 2007 Q Awards,[3] although they lost to, Coventry-based, English band, The Enemy.[4]

On October 22, 2007, Simon stated on the band's MySpace page that they will begin recording their second album in Berlin, Germany in 2008. Then on March 23, 2008, Simon announced through a MySpace blog posting that the band are at the writing stage, and have 7 songs which have been distilled from 50+ tunes. He also mentioned that recording won't occur until July/August 2008.

In 2008 Cherry Ghost won an Ivor Novello Award for "People Help the People" in the category of Best Contemporary Song.[5]

[edit] Musical style

The band's MySpace page states that they have been "inspired by the haunting melancholy of acts such as Sparklehorse, Smog, Johnny Cash and the ceaseless hope to be found at the heart of this Northern landscape." The name 'Cherry Ghost' is a lyric taken from the song "Theologians" by Wilco.
