Cherry Garcia is a flavor of ice cream (and low fat frozen yogurt) sold exclusively by Vermont ice cream manufacturer Ben & Jerry's. The ice cream itself is cherry flavored and, in addition, contains pieces of Bing cherries and chunks of chocolate. Ben & Jerry's first began offering this particular flavor in 1987 as a tribute to lead guitarist and vocalist for the Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia. The name was originally suggested by Jane Williamson.
For a month following the musician's death in 1995, the ice cream was made with black cherries instead of Bings as a show of mourning.
Since its initial offering, Cherry Garcia has rapidly grown in popularity and is now Ben & Jerry's most popular flavour.[1]In direct contrast, this flavor has been discontinued in UK stores; however, the frozen yogurt version of Cherry Garcia is still sold in this market.
Cherry Garcia is also part of Ben & Jerry's flavor range in Europe. However, the European version is made with frozen cherries rather than Bing cherries.
