Cherry (Australian Girlband)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cherry was an all-Australian girl pop music group. It was one of the first girl bands to emerge since the loss of the successful early 90's girl-group Girlfriend (who later became gf4). Cherry consisted of Zoe, Hayley, Camielle, Gerri and Amy.

The debut single 'SOS' was produced by well known industry producer/song writer Michael Szumowski (Toni Pearen, Bardot, Marcia Hines, Guy Sebastian, Shannon Noll). With backing and heavy marketing from Columbia and Sony Music Entertainment there was great hope for the girls![citation needed] Unfortunately, SOS debuted in the low 40s of the top-100 ARIA charts.

Never giving up, the label glammed up the girls and decided on a more edgy approach for band. This resulted in the group covering the Transvision Vamp hit 'I want your love'. The B-side single featured the track 'The way you do' penned by Szumowski and local artist Toni Pearen. Once again, I believe the single only reached the ARIA top 50. Once again, the label went back to the drawing board, more time was again spent on promotion in local teen magazines and local appearances.

The group then went onto release their third single written by well-known song writer Diane Warren. The ballard (track) was titled 'Saddest Song'. The single also featured a dance remix and rnb versions of the song. Once again, the single entered the ARIA charts in the low 50s. At this time, two of the groups singers Zoe and Amy left the group, only leaving three remaining members of the group. I believe 'Saddest song' was pulled from the shelves and re-worked to feature the new 'Cherry' line-up featuring Hayley, Camielle and Gerri. The new version of the single was recorded and a film clip produced (as you can see from the attached video). However, it was never officially released. The group disbanded by the end of 1999.

The group were originally planning to release their debut album 'Sacred Kiss' in October of that year. While there is no evidence to suggest the album was released, the track 'Sacred Kiss' was actually recorded and once again penned by the famous Diane Warren.
