Chengdu Shude High School

Chengdu Shùdé High School (Simplified Chinese: 成都市树德中学, Traditional Chinese: 成都樹徳中學, pinyin: Chéngdu Shùdé Zhongxúe)is a top high school in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China. In Chinese, Shùdé literally means establishing morality.

In 1929, Shùdé High School was founded by General Sun Zhen (孙震) as a private school. The teaching building and students' dormitory building were finished by 1931. The motto of the school is given by "loyalty, bravery and diligence" (忠,勇,勤). The goal of its education is "building virtue and building character" (树德树人).

In 1932, the first batch of 50 boys and 50 girls were admitted into Boys' School and Girls' School, respectively.

In 1944, a national newspaper ranked Shùdé High School one of the best 4 private schools in China.

In 1945, Li Zongren, then vice president of Republic of China visited Shùdé High School.

In 1950, after the communist revolution, the administration of Shùdé High School was taken over by the municipal government and renamed to be No. 9 High School of Chengdu.

In the 1960s, No. 9 High School of Chengdu serves as the middle school for children of the cadres of the Communist Party of China in Chengdu and Sichuan Province.

In 1980, Shùdé High School was honored the Beacon high school of Sichuan Province.

In 1989, Shùdé High School celebrated its 60th anniversary in 1989, and changed its name back to the original form of Shùdé High School. Sun Jingshan (孙静山), grandson of Sun Zhen, the founder of the school, visited the school from Taiwan and gave a donation to the school's library. [1]

With an annual intake of 1,000 students, Shùdé High School attracts the elite students from Sichuan province. Every year, in the National College Entrance Examination, the average score of Shùdé High School ranks one of the highest in Sichuan province. [2]

The basketball team of Shùdé High School has won the championship in Sichuan Middle School Basketball Cup from 2000 to 2005 and get the third place in Nike National Middle School Basketball Cup.

The International Department of Shùdé High School has cooperation with Austrilian and British Higher education institutions, and given Victorian Certificate of Education to its graduates.

From late 1990s, more than half of the students enrolled in Shùdé High School need to pay an amount of money annually to the school administration. The school explains this amount of money is used for development of the campus, and is allowed by provincial government. However, since Shùdé High School is a public school, this school policy has caused complaints from students.
