Chemperi, the small, calm, and prosperous town resting on the lap of the Western Ghat is the land of rubber and spices, beautiful hillocks, daring and loving people, serene and vibrant streams and ever cherishing dreams. Built in the bank of Chemperi River, the land served as the epic center of people migrating from Travancore to the north districts of Kerala.

[edit] HISTORY
The modern history of this town starts with the arrival of migrants from Kottayam district of Kerala during the 1930s. The migration to this place started with the arrival of the Pulickal family. The following years witnessed the arrival of the Kandathil family, Munthiringatukunnel family, Chalil family, family, Kadukunnel family etc. The hard work of the migrants made Chemperi a big town with almost all the facilities to meet the basic needs of its population.
[edit] ECONOMY
The majority of the population are dependent directly or indirectly on agriculture for their livelihood. The main crops grown are rubber, coconut, pepper, cashew, tapioca, arecanut, and other plantation crops.
Rubber occupies the largest area among plantation crops. Next to rubber, coconut is the most important crop. An important cash crop grown is cashewnut. Arecanut is also widely cultivated.
Among spices, pepper occupies an important place. Pepper is mostly grown as an intercrop with coconut, arecanut and various fruit trees. In the hilly areas of Chemperi like Nellikutty and Areekamala, the inter-cultivation is done with rubber and cashew. Rubber is the most important industrial cash crop among the plantation crops.

Chemperi has a humid climate with an oppressive hot season from March to the end of May. This is followed by the South-West monsoon which continues till the end of September. December to February experience cool climate.

Paithal Mala is one of the tourist attractions near Chemperi. It is a hillstation near Kudiyanmala. This hill on the Kerala-Karnataka border is 65 km north of Kannur. Ideal for trekking, it is around 1,450 metres above sea level. A base reception centre and a watchtower atop the cliff function for the benefit of tourists and trekkers.

Nirmala Higher Secondary School is the first educational institution in Chemperi. It was founded in the 1950s by the arch diocese of Tellicherry. The school is being managed by the parish of Chemperi. There is a network of government schools, corporate schools and CBSE schools in and around Chemperi. With the setting up of Vimaljyothi Engineering College in Jyothinagar Chemperi in 2002, Chemperi has become a center of professional education in Kerala. Run by the Archdiocese of Tellichery, it is ranked among the premium engineering colleges in Kerala. It is one of the premier institutes of technology in Malabar.

Chemperi has a wide network of roads. It is connected with hillhighway. There are well-maintained roads connecting Taliparamba, Iritty, Alakode, Cherupuzha etc. The upcoming Kannur International Airport is just 45km away from Chemperi. The nearest railway station is Kannur and the nearest port is Mangalore.
