Chemosis is the swelling (or edema) of the conjunctiva. It is usually caused by allergies or viral infections, as well as eye rubbing. Chemosis accompanied by facial edema may also occur as a result of superior vena cava obstruction. Exophthalmos, a sign of hyperthyroidism, can be associated with chemosis, periorbital puffiness, lid retraction, and lid lag.
Treatment depends on the cause of the chemosis.
