Cheltenham is a railway station in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, located in the suburb of Cheltenham on the Frankston railway line. Chentenham is classed as a Premium Station and is in Metcard Zone 2.

[edit] Facilities

The station is located at the northern end of the Charman Road level crossing, which also provided platform access. Westfield Southland shopping centre is a short walk from the station.

The station consists of three platforms, two in an island format and one a side platform. The island platform (platform 1 and 2, platform 1 being the dead end platform) has a large weatherboard building with an enclosed waiting room and a ticket office, while platform 3 has a large weatherboard building. A large Metcard machine is located inside the waiting room, which is able to dispense most ticketing options available and also accept notes and coins. A small Metcard machine is located at the entrance to platform 3.

[edit] History

Cheltenham Station opened on Monday, 19th December 1881.[1] There was once a siding on the eastern side of the station at the Melbourne end.[2] The signal box is inside the station building, and was installed in 1972, and enables trains to terminate in platform 1.[3]

On May 10, 2008 Australian actress and singer Jessica Jacobs tripped and fell onto the tracks, and was subsequently struck by a train and died instantly from her injuries. As a result of the accident, buses replaced all trains on the Frankston Line for the rest of the day, a major service interruption.[4]
