Cheltenham is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is shared between the Local Government Areas of the City of Bayside and City of Kingston. At the 2006 census, Cheltenham had a population of 19,523.
Cheltenham is approximately 21 km south-east from Melbourne's central business district, postcode 3192. As a suburb, it was established in the 1880s. Much of the residential development was built in the 1940s and continued into the 1980s. Cheltenham also has a large industrial area on the eastern edge and a smaller area at the far western edge. The western area is noted for Melbourne's only elevator test shaft.
Cheltenham also has a large shopping centre to its north called Westfield Shoppingtown (Southland) which was built in 1968. It has been continually expanded over the years resulting in a bridge across Nepean Highway containing shops across it. Many new retail outlets have popped up in Cheltenham in recent years, most notably the Direct Factory Outlets. Originally built in 1996 as Fairways Market, it is a huge centre for clothing outlets, which has expanded greatly in the past 4 years.

A Community Supermarket located at 288A Charman Rd, Cheltenham was established by the Bayside Dream Centre to provide groceries and other essential items to disadvantaged people within the community at affordable prices. This service is available to all people, not only health-care or concession card owners. It is a not-for-profit enterprise.

Cheltenham is Home to some great sporting facilities and clubs, particular noted sports in the area are Golf, Cricket, Australian Rules Football & Swimming
There are a number of golf courses in Cheltenham - Cheltenham Golf Club, Sandringham Municipal Golf Links and The Victoria Golf Club.
Cheltenham Football & Cricket Club are Based in Weatherall Rd. The Cricket Club was established in 1872. Originally in the Embedded imageFrankston-Glenhuntly Cricket Association, Migrating to The Federal District Cricket Association where the Junior sides still play. The 4 Senior Sides now play in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association.
The most famous son of Cheltenham Cricket & Football Clubs is Trevor Barker, who went on to play Australian Rules Football for the St. Kilda Club. Trevor also a talented Cricketer won his only Premiership with Cheltenham Cricket Club as an under 16. His Father Jack coached the side
Cheltenham Amateur Swimming Club is a registered not-for-profit association, affiliated with Swimming Victoria. Following on from Waves Learn to Swim program level 5, they provide swim coaching and training based on modern sustainable principles. They run various levels of swim squads including development squads, competitive squads and fitness squads for non-competitors.
Members have the opportunity to compete in club races and attend social events throughout the year. Members, if they desire, can also attend Inter-Club, District and State competitions.

There are a number of religious organisations and places of worship in Cheltenham, including Anglican, Church of Christ, Uniting, Presbyterian, Roman Catholic and Pentecostal/Charismatic Christian churches.
[edit] Cemeteries
The Old Cheltenham Cemetery is located in Charman Road, next to the railway station, and was established in October 1864. Wandering through the cemetery today, you will find the graves of many of Cheltenham's most distinguished inhabitants. You will also find memorials to some of its youngest, such as the many unnamed babies from the nearby Children's Home (the site now occupied by Westfield's Southland Shoppingtown) who died as a result of disease early in the last century.
Most burials now take place at the Cheltenham Memorial Park, in nearby Reserve Road, established in 1933.

Cheltenham railway station is located on the Frankston line, at Charman Road. Bus routes also service the suburb, mainly focusing on the large Westfield Southland Shoppingtown complex.
