[edit] History
The company incorporated shortly after its first production.[2] Both Priore and Hayden-Findlay are co-producers for the company in addition to being performers.[3] Carmine Aufiero is the company's musical director and conductor. Chelsea Opera stages operas and holdsbenefit concerts[4] with a chamber orchestra. Chelsea Opera Company strives to bring classical music to students through on-site school performances and through hands-on involvement of young people. Students can assist in both the production and performance.[5] The first operas presented by the company included Suor Angelica, Cavalleria Rusticana, and Amahl and the Night Visitors.
[edit] Performance and performers
The Chelsea Opera Company's 2005 production of Gian Carlo Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors included Spanish mezzo-soprano Magdalena Llamas, a veteran of Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall, Colombian baritone Alex Britton, with previous appearances at Brooklyn's Regina Opera Company,[6] and Puerto Rican bass Jorge O Casio, a finalist at the Metropolitan Opera Auditions.[7] The company conducted a citywide search to find a young boy to play the shepherd, eventually finding 11 year old Nick Agar-Johnson.[8] Soprano Maryann Mootos, Marquis Award winner in the Emerging Professional Division of the 2006 Classical Singer competition,[9] alternated with soprano Crystallia Spilianaki in performing the role of Nedda. In Rod Gomez's production of Ruggero Leoncavallo's Pagliacci, the lead character Canio was performed alternately by American tenors Daniel Rodriguez,[10] protegé of noted tenor Placido Domingo, and Californian Christopher Campbell, a veteran in the role.
