[edit] Notes

  1. ^ Includes all goals scored in FA Premier League, Football League, FA Cup, Football League Cup, Full Members Cup, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup, UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Charity/Community Shield matches
  2. ^ Chelsea were founded and entered the Football League in time for the 1905-06 season, but not in time to enter the FA Cup first round, thus forcing them to play in the preliminary rounds.
  3. ^ Having finished 19th Chelsea would normally have been relegated, but when competitive football resumed in 1919 the First Division was expanded to 22 teams; the club were invited to rejoin the division.
  4. ^ Competitive football in England was abandoned three games into the 1939-40 season and all results were annulled.
  5. ^ In the early years of the League Cup, some bigger clubs opted not to participate. Chelsea withdrew from the competition in 1961-62, 1962-63 and 1965-66.
  6. ^ Chelsea finished outside the direct relegation zone, but were relegated via the short-lived system which saw teams who finished 4th from bottom of the First Division entered into a play-off competition with Second Division teams who finished 3rd, 4th and 5th.
