CHS is based on a three-house system. The houses are all named after Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and John Greenleaf Whittier, three famous New England writers. When the school was built, there was an additional house named for Emily Dickinson. After a decade, the school branched out from the house system; the classes were no longer strictly divided into house hallways. Now, the only house structure mainly serves administrative functions. Each house is comprised of two to three guidance counselors, a dean, and an office. All students and teachers are assigned a house at the beginning of their first years.
The school has recently undergone extensive renovation. The renovations included improved science classrooms, new ceilings, and a Performing Arts Center (PAC). The construction, completed between 2005 and 2007, gave Chelmsford High School its own auditorium for the first time. Previously, any performances put on by the high school were held in the auditorium of nearby McCarthy Middle School, formerly a high school. Issues with the PAC's lighting and sound system have yet to be fully resolved. The new PAC building will serve as a tool used for functions such as the annual Mr. CHS, performances by the school's music and theater groups, and various assemblies.
On November 1, 2007, a case of tuberculosis was discovered at Chelmsford High School. Although only one student initially had the disease, roughly 160 students were subsequently tested. The students were re-tested in January. Five students had positive results, but were not exhibiting symptoms of the disease at that time.
