Chellanam is a city in the south west coastal area of the Ernakulam district in the South Indian state of Kerala.

The name Chellanam is derived from the word 'chellavanam' which means a forest (woods) where no one goes. Chellanam was the southern border of the old Kingdom of Cochin. In olden times there was a police station called 'chouki' in the south west end, where policemen looked after the border for goods transportation through the canal for Tax collection. There was a canal (azhi) passing through this place to the sea which later closed naturally and formed in a place called Andhakaranazhi in Alappuzha district.

Chellanam is a narrow landscale about 10 km in length starting from St. George Church at the southern end and Kattiparambu (Near Thoppumpady) at the northern end with a width of hardly 250 mtrs. accommodating in between Maruvkad, Challakadavoo, Kandakadavoo, Puthanthode, Kannamaly, Cheriyakadavoo, Kattiparambil. This landscape is filled with bungalow type houses with courtyard as is customary. The Panchayat has a total area of 19.37 km2. As per 2001 census the Panchayat ( local administrative body) has a population of 36,209. ( 18,481 women and 17,728 men)
[edit] Religion and Culture
Majority of the people are Roman (Latin) Catholics. It includes Diocese of Cochin and Diocese of Alleppy. St. Sebastian's Church Chellanam, St. Antony's Church Kannamaly, St. Joseph's Church Cheriyakadavu and St. Francis Assisi Church Kattiparambu are the parishes belonging to the Cochin Diocese. St. George's Church Chellanam, XavierDesh Church South Chellanam, St. Francis Xavier's Church Kandakkadavu are the Parishes belonging to the Diocese of Alleppey.
Hindus are belonged to different casts. Gowda Saraswatha Brahmins, Eazhava etc... Hindu's have Temples in Gonduparambu, Maruvakkadu, Kandakkadavu, Kannamaly Cheriyakadavu. The temple situated in kannamaly (near Police Station) named - "Venkitachalapathi Kshethram" is the first temple of Gowda Saraswatha Brahmins in Kerala. The People in Chellanam live harmoniously.
The Chavittu Nadakamart form of drama mainly derived from the ancestors of the Chellanam and is still there today.

Most of the people make their living by fishing and the rest by agriculture and other works. Fishermen are used to deep sea fishing as well as back water fishing and use new ideas and technologies for this purpose.
