Chehalis people
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term Chehalis people refers to two Coast Salish aboriginal groups in the Pacific Northwest, one in Washington, the other in the British Columbia. The larger of the two groups are the Chehalis tribe of southern Puget Sound. The smaller group in British Columbia officially call themselves Sts'Ailes (beating heart in Halqemeylem) and are independent from but related to, and sharing a common language, with the Stó:lō peoples around them. Tradition among the latter group has it that the Washington group are an offshoot, isolated from their original home during the Great Deluge.
