Checkpoint restart

Checkpoint restart is a facility implemented in databases and backup-restore software. Transactions in case of databases are important and sometimes time consuming operations, same is the case of backup and restore operation. A transaction, backup or restore operation comprise of many atomic operations. In this facility checkpoints are placed after some 'n' numbers of these atomic operations. Hence if there is a failure during a transaction, backup or restore, on recovery of system the operation can continue from the last checkpoint instead of restarting it from beginning, hence saving lot of time in case where above operations are lengthy.

Minimum value of checkpoint in Netbackup is 5 minutes for backups, i.e during backups checkpoint will be placed every 5 minutes. Hence in case when system recovers from a failure, the backup operation (which went into error due to failure) can resume from a point which was at most 5 minutes prior failure. Minimum value in case of restores is 1 minute.
