Cheadle Heath railway station
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cheadle Heath railway station was a railway station serving the Cheadle and Cheadle Hulme, now districts of Stockport, United Kingdom. The station was built on the Midland Railway so called "Disley cut off" line (correct name: the New Mills and Heaton Mersey Line) to avoid firstly the congestion and junctions of New Mills, Marple, Romiley and Stockport Tiviot Dale and secondly the difficult profile of the existing line, slowing down the London St Pancras to Manchester Central services. On 1 October 1901 the initial section from Heaton Mersey to Cheadle Heath was opened, with the passenger traffic to New Mills South Junction starting on 1 July 1902.
The station remained open to passengers until 1 January 1967 and to freight traffic until 1 July 1968.
The site is now occupied by a Morrisons supermarket and a car park. The line (only a single track remains) is still used by goods trains, mostly carrying limestone from quarries in the Peak District to chemical factories in Cheshire.
