Cheadle Bleachworks

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cheadle Bleachworks in Cheadle, Greater Manchester, England, started life as a Water powered corn mill.[1] Sometime later, it was converted to a chemical plant owned by Thor Chemicals and produced chlorine bleaching agents for use in the dye industry in Manchester at the time. It was closed down in 1993.[2]

[edit] Location

The works was located to the left of the sliproad where the M60 Clockwise meets the Kingsway Southbound. The chimney (part of the apartment complex) is visible, but most of the buildings were hidden by overgrowth.

[edit] Special Significance

Until recently, the old chemical factory ruins were used as a stage-ground for practising Parkour and the large-scale graffiti has been featured in many forums as an example of urban 'art'.[3]

[edit] Housing

In spite of demonstrations from enthusiasts, in April 2008, a site conversion by Hamptons International to apartments was completed.[4] The old buildings were demolished but the large chimney remains as part of the new housing complex.
