Yes, "IULAW" is a reference to the article that I am editing, and in fact I do have a connection with the school. However, I can assure you that my edits will be minor, and I will "take great care not to edit in a manner that may be perceived as controversial, promotional or agenda-driven" in compliance COI guidelines.

The COI page says that editors with a "close connection with a subject are recommended to disclose this." I am an alumnus of IU Law, and my choice of the user name "IULAW" (and now "IULawAlum") was specifically meant to disclose that I have a relationship with the subject.

The above in mind, would you please set "IULawAlum" as my username?

Actually, my primary objective is to guard against incorrect information from being added to pages related to IU Law, and so I plan to restrict my edits pretty much to such entries and will edit nothing else. But again, my reason for requesting the "IULawAlum" user name is to disclose my relationship with the school. I don't mean to be confrontational about this, but wouldn't it be better that, under the circumstances, I use a name such as "IULawAlum" rather than edit with a more anonymous name or an IP address?

Nichalp, have you read the COI guidelines? They specifically state that "some editors declare an interest in a particular topic area. They do this in various ways..." How do you suggest that I declare my interest? The COI guidelines also explain that "defending interests" is among the editing activities permitted for those who are closely associated with a subject. Are you suggesting that I don't have the right to defend, in a neutral and unbiased manner, the interest of the institution of which I am an alumnus?

Yes I know about COI. As long as what you publish about your institution follows wikipedia policy, no one can really take action against you. But your username suggests an official link to the institution which is why we are reluctant to rename you. We request you to choose a less closely linked username. I like the name. It's my user name in every other wikimedia project. I'm not a vandal and if admins bots are blocking people solely because their name has the word poop in it, then maybe we need to check the rules that are guiding said admins bots. Also, username violations should not be taken literally. The name that I am choosing is not offensive even though it says poop. Wikipedia is not censored and we must ensure that the spirit of the rules in the username violations article are respected, not the literal rule. --Xer0 06:29, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

Why would it get blocked manually? I would like to report any admin that is willing to block an account solely on the basis of the username, considering the user has never gotten a warning of any sort and has helped out in many articles. Refer to username violations, to Wikipedia is not censored and also to Ignoring all rules - a beginners guide. Remember to Use your common sense over anything else. I edit in Wikipedia in spanish and english, wikisource spanish and english, wikibooks spanish and english, wikiquote spanish and english and wikinews; most with the username Hamsterpoop. I am trying to make it easier for myself to work but you guys are being unreasonable. If rules make you...not desirous of participating in the Wiki, then ignore them and go about your business. Let's not drown in a glass of water; this isn't a big issue. Maybe you should stop routinely blocking usernames with certain words in them. If you are going to take on the task of fighting vandalism and inappropriateness, evaluate the situation and actually consider whether what you are doing benefits or hurts the project. I can't stress this enough, please refer to wikipedia is not a bureaucracy. I do not want to make a big deal of this, but I do not want this to be set as a prescedent on censorship in Wikipedia. Just my 2c-worth. This discussion with regard to "poop" would be meaningless in the UK because it is not there used as a synonym for excrement, in fact its most common usage there is in "poop deck" which is part of an old sailing ship and nothing at all to do with defecation. Far be it from me to suggest an American bias here, but it seems to be long-settled policy on WP that usernames should not contain that particular sequence of characters- presumably to prevent 11 year-olds from giggling uncontrollably and their parents from tutting. Perhaps if you chose HamsterMist instead that would be acceptable here (but not in the German WP, because "mist" in German means "dung"). That's what bugs me. That rule (Usernames that offensively include slurs, or references to reproductive or excretory bodily functions) was probably put there to avoid words like shit, cum, etc and that's why I think that this is a poor interpretation of the rule. Hamsterpoop does not include the word poop offensively. What if I wanted to name myself Go.#2? This could be a reference to excrement but nobody would say it is offensive.
