[edit] Question from Pål
Hi, it seems like you have contributed some parts of the article about meta-. I am curious about the part that says the current english usage of the prefix is accidental deriving from Aristotle´s works about metaphysics... Did you write this? Do you have any sources for this fact? I´m very curious.
Thank,
Pål, stockholm, sweden
- Something like this, from the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy: The first major work in the history of philosophy to bear the title “Metaphysics” was the treatise by Aristotle that we have come to know by that name. But Aristotle himself did not use that title or even describe his field of study as ‘metaphysics’; the name was evidently coined by the first century C.E. editor who assembled the treatise we know as Aristotle's Metaphysics out of various smaller selections of Aristotle's works. The title ‘metaphysics’ — literally, ‘after the Physics’ — very likely indicated the place the topics discussed therein were intended to occupy in the philosophical curriculum. They were to be studied after the treatises dealing with nature (ta phusika). That is, meta- is not originally about going to a higher level of abstraction. [edit] Question from Haberjw1
Charles, thanks for touching up the Angle of Arrival page. Two questions:
1) How did you happen to find it? I was very suprised when I looked and realized that it had been touched up in the short time since I had posted it? Just curious...
- From the list of new pages, accessible from the Recent Changes page. Charles Matthews 16:39, 11 July 2005 (UTC)
2) The title is currently Angle of arrival, while it is generally written as Angle of Arrival (with Arrival captialized (sp?)) -- I would like to change the page title to include the correct capitalization (sp?).
- I assume you are recently arrived, in which case the Move Page function is disabled for you temporarily (this is against vandals). Moving pages is routine, once you have that. In general we do prefer lower case, unless there is a strong reason: upper case should carry some information. BTW you can sign with four tildes. Charles Matthews 16:39, 11 July 2005 (UTC)
- I have tried Google, and 'angle of arrival' is common as was as the AoA version. So I'm not clear which is better. Charles Matthews 16:42, 11 July 2005 (UTC)
- I've now made a redirect - if this isn't edited, the page can still be moved there. The usage I saw on Google suggested that the lower case version is OK. Charles Matthews 16:44, 11 July 2005 (UTC)
-
- Yup, am new to posting. Have used as a resource for a while. Ok, searched around various titles, and I see the convention. I was thinking that if I titled an article I would call it "Angle of Arrival", not "Angle of arrival". Will follow convention. Thanks, and thanks for the ~..~ hint.!

[edit] Water Organs
Hello, I'm not entirely familiar with the format of Wikipedia but I noticed your name in conjunction with the article on "water organs" I'm trying(!) to research the perpetual organ and the memmonium which is mentioned in that article. If you have any bibliographical references you could share with me I'd be extremely greatful because I cant find anything solid anywhere, apart from farmer (1931) which I'm finding impossible to get a hold of!
Thanks for your time

- I don't have much to suggest; I just did a little needed editorial work on that page. Charles Matthews 09:42, 21 November 2005 (UTC)
thanks for your time anyway :)
[edit] Thanks for link to 'transposition' on wronskian
Charles, I'm quite new to the wp contributory community but have been a wp infosumer for a number of years now. Nice to meet a major contributor to wp's entries on logic - particularly substructural. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to enlightenment on finer points of logic that might follow from further edit interactions. Regards, Ben Spinozoan 17:01, 23 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Question from Plasto7
Hi, I understand you added the following passage to the article on "Minkowski addition": "The actual convolution of the indicator functions of the set will be a function with the same support as the Minkowski sum." I need a result like this for a research project I'm currently working on and would greatly appreciate your help. Could you give me a hint where to find a proof of this statement?
Thanks for your effort.
