Carolena Nericcio is the the dancer credited with developing American Tribal Style Belly Dance (ATS) and the founder and director of FatChanceBellyDance company based in San Francisco. Carolena began studying bellydance at the age of fourteen. She trained for seven years with Masha Archer who was a student of Jamila Salimpour
The U.S. Tribal style originated with Jamila Salimpour in San Francisco, California, in the 1960's, with her dance company 'Bal-Anat'. The group created a performance that was a fusion of ethnic influenced dance and modern-day creativity, presented with quasi-historical flavor, especially within the costuming. The presentation consisted of soloists and small groups taking turn coming forward to dance within the context of a troupe performance.
Carolena's own particular variation of the Tribal form, known as ATS or American Tribal Style Belly Dance requires a group (troupe) of dancers composing a vocabulary of cues and transitional moves and formations that are designed to be performed as an improvisation in a lead-follow manner. Solos are performed, but are generally supported in a group environment.
These formations and cues are the anchor of improvisational choreography. Even when formal choreography is needed, it is created around the logic of the improvisational formations and cues.
Pure ATS is typically performed with a chorus of dancers using zills, or finger cymbals, as accompaniment.
The music can be folkloric or modern, and the costume is heavily layered, evoking traditions of any or all of its fusion of cultural influences

2007 marked the 20th anniversary of Carolena's FatChanceBellyDance This milestone also marked the completion of eleven dvds, three cds, a Folkwear pattern and a special edition boa and travelok published by Barnes and Noble.

[edit] Veganism

Carolena describes herself as leading a compassionate lifestyle that avoids all animal products: food, leather, wool, silk and anything of animal origin. She has a great admiration for Quan Yin or *Guan Yin the Goddess of Compassion, whom she has her tattooed on her arm. Carolena has incorporated Veganism ethics in to her dance company, replacing their silk veils with poly chiffon. Having been an ethical vegetarian since age 14 years old, she became an active vegan in 2006. The fcbd website now includes a link on to 'Carolena's Little Vegan World' which offers resources for a Compassionate lifestyle.

:"During the summer of 2006 I opened a fortune cookie (I didn't eat it because they are made with egg, but I digress.) The fortune read, "Depart not from the path to which fate has you assigned." Huh? At 45 years of age, I want to think about retiring — did this mean that I was going to be a belly dancer for the rest of my life?! And then it hit me: all this time that I have spent gaining an audience and getting connected to people is so that I would be able to reach out and talk about Veganism and the compassionate, cruelty-free lifestyle."
