Talk:Chaumont, New York
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Perhaps worth noting in this article is the pronunciation of the name. Unlike Chaumont, France, it has been anglicized, and residents of the village and area pronounce it shuh-MOE, the "uh" being a "schwa" sound, the "-nt" being silent rather than the nasal that ends the French city.
Like many other Jefferson County names, it derives from early landholder James de le Ray de Chaumont. (Source not readily available online but can be confirmed with Jefferson County Historical Society.)172.162.46.54 18:01, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
