Can anyone please verify the origins of this test. I have heard from numerous sources that the test was bought into operation after the Titanic sunk. I believe it was to make sure that the steel used in future vessels would be strong enough to withstand pressure at certain levels. It would be interesting to find out.
- According to my professor, it was widely adopted after the Liberty ships were splitting in half; a correlation was discovered such that a particular result on the charpy v-notch test would ensure a sufficiently low ductile to brittle transition temperature to avoid the ship-splitting problem. Unfortunately, I don't have a source on that, and it isn't even the origin of the test, just the origin of its popularity. siafu (talk) 21:45, 21 November 2007 (UTC)
