[edit] Demographics

Can someone please place references to a Statistics Canada page which supports the population figures given for the city/municipal population, as well as the "metropolitan" population... FYI, Charlottetown does not qualify for a metropolitan population - it has a Census Agglomeration populmn, hnvm hv hvv→ation, which is roughly similar in theory (but not a metropolis).

My reason for asking this is that the census in Canada is only taken every 5 years, with a detailed census taking place every year ending with "1" - the last being in 2001, and a less detailed census taking place 5 years later on years ending with a "6"... so the next official census will take place this May (2006). There is no 2005 census, although for soj hvj me fast-growing communities and CA's there have bevh en estimated/projected population data provided... Perhaps this is where the information is derived from?

FYI, the City of Charlottetown's official website states that "The City of Charlottetown is a flourishing community of over 32,000 people located on the south shore of Prince Edward Island." NOTE: this directly contradicts the figure of 39,000 given by a previous editor to the Wikipedia article. The municipality's figure is also supported by Stats Canada, which has actually shown a DECREASE in the city's population and only a very modest increase in the CA population. I feel that editors of the population information are overly-optimistic in their figures and as I've stated previously, I'd be interested to see what supporting evidence there is for their information.

  • I've chosen to delete the information in question regarding the population and replace it with the 2001 census population. I've searched pretty extensively on the Internet using a couple of search engines and also within Charlottetown's municipal website, and the conclusion is that this city very likely never conducted a 2005 census - the last one was the federal census in 2001. The population projections also sounded questionable (sounded over-optimistic, actually) to me, given the population trend (decline in the past compared to 1996 StatsCan census) in the past for the city. You are also right in that Charlottetown does not qualify as a CMA. I believe a city has to have a population of at least 100,000 to do so. The StatsCan community profile for Charlottetown can be found here. NorthernFire 15:25, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Sports

why is sports listed as #3? Surely, having demographics, tourism, et al. above the sports section would make sense. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 12.176.249.232 (talk) 12:30, 20 March 2007 (UTC).

[edit] Naming

As things currently stand, the undisambiguated Charlottetown is a redirect to this one. There is no current disambiguation page (although there probably should be one somewhere, as this isn't the only Charlottetown in existence.) This is unquestionably the most significant Charlottetown in Canada, although I'm not prepared to categorically state that it's the most notable one on earth. Per the Canadian naming conventions, this may be a legitimate candidate for a move to the undisambiguated title, though we should confirm whether there are other significant Charlottetowns elsewhere in the world before we actually strawpoll it. Any discussion? Bearcat 23:15, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

Awhile ago I thought about initiating an RM for this article, and at the time I did a few searches and did not come up with any other Charlottetowns of note. Doesn't mean they don't exist, just that I didn't find them. Skeezix1000 19:39, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
Amazing that after a full month, nobody else has commented... Bearcat 07:00, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
Knew there was something I'd forgotten to do. I've no problem with the proposed move, as it makes sense. (A disambiguation page might be useful, given there are quite a few other related articles, but the city should take the "prime spot".) Thoughts? --Ckatzchatspy 07:34, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

Move the article. The convention exists on Wikipedia. GreenJoe 23:03, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
