[edit] Naming of Charlotte

  • I added {{Fact}} onto "Charlotte was named for Charlotte Augusta, Princess of Wales." This statement was included on the first version of this page and comes from the epodunk.com entry at http://www.epodunk.com/cgi-bin/genInfo.php?locIndex=63047. While epodunk says that it uses many credible sources to compile its pages (see about:sources), it doesnt name those sources for any given article. I've searched a few articles from Rochester History and have not yet been able to find a mention to origin of the name. The closest I've found is a reference to "Charlottesburg" on page 2 of Barnes, Joseph W. (January 1975). "The Annexation of Charlotte". Rochester History XXXVII (1). Rochester Public Library. ISSN 0035-7413. (http://www.libraryweb.org/~rochhist/v37_1975/v37i1.pdf)

I'll keep looking for more info on this subject and leave the Charlotte Augusta reference on the page for now... Dspark76 (talk) 14:30, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

  • I found the Journal of De Witt Clinton from 1811 which claims that "Charlottsburgh" was in compliment to Colonel Troup's daughter.

I removed the old note about Charlotte Augusta. Dspark76 (talk) 13:33, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

  • It may be possible that the renaming from Charlottsburg to Charlotte was in honor of the Princess Charlotte Augusta of Wales who died during childbirth in 1817, but I havent yet found any references to confirm this... Dspark76 (talk) 00:23, 26 January 2008 (UTC)
