I don't know where the idea that Conan the Barbarian is illiterate came from, but it doesn't apply in either Howard's books (in which Conan's first appearance was with scroll in hand) or the John Milius movie (in which he is again seen reading, until he's interrupted by a terrified prostitute, and the narration specifies that he studied philosophy).
