Whoops, I missed that! However I'm not sure that images of portraits are copyrightable. IANAL though. ++Lar: t/c 10:18, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

- They are not. The image is being held on a Floridian server and dates from over 100 years after the death of the Artist. As such, for Wikipedia, it is fine. --Irishpunktom\talk 10:20, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

- Then, what is that " © NPG " doing on the right edge of the image ? Please see Talk: Main Page #© NPGD1263.jpg ?. -- 199.71.174.100 11:01, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

- I suspect the copyright tag (subsequently cropped off) refers to the copyright that the photographer or scanning agency (in this case employed by the NPG) slapped on the picture. It doesn't refer to the original artwork, but rather to the time and effort taken to scan/photograph the artwork. It is similar to you taking a photograph of the place you are sitting in at the moment - you can't claim copyright on the subject of the photograph, but you can claim copyright on the photograph itself, especially if you retouch and 'alter' the picture. - I wonder if the removal of the uncropped version is okay under GFDL ? I thought we are supposed to keep edit histories. --199.71.174.100 10:16, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

Picture Librarian Matthew Bailey of the Gallery suggested that their assertion of copyright is valid. Copyright Officer Bernard Horrocks is also responsive. Contact info, including London phone number is at: http://www.npg.org.uk/live/copyrite.asp
I get the impression that Mr. Horrocks attempted to pursue the matter once at get less-than-adequate responses from the OTRS volunteers

I recommended

Perhaps somebody like Soufron will at least be able to discuss the matter at Mr. Horrocks' level of expertise. -- 71.141.3.69 03:19, 19 May 2006 (UTC)
