[edit] Summary
Picture of Charles Darwin in 1881, from The Illustrated Origin of Species by Charles Darwin, abridged and illustrated by Richard Leakey ISBN 0-571-14586-8. Originally published by BCA books (UK) in 1979 and by Hill & Wang (US), also in 1979.
This is a black-and-white (and cropped) reproduction of John Collier's (1859 - 1934) portrait of Charles Darwin. This painting is PD in the UK, but the color photograph at the UK National Portrait Gallery may not be (see COM:ART).
The painting is PD in the U.S. as it was published in 1900 in P. Chalmers Mitchell, Thomas Henry Huxley – A sketch of his life and work, p. 146; The Knickerbocker Press, New York; © 1900 G. P. Putnam's Sons. That black-and-white photograph also is PD in the U.S.
The copyright status of this black-and-white reproduction is unclear. It is certainly in the public domain in the U.S., but if it is a new British photo, it might be copyrighted in the UK.
