IMDb profile |
Chaudhvin Ka Chand (Hindi: चौदवीं का चाँद) is a 1960 Hindi feature film directed by Mohammed Sadiq. A production of Guru Dutt, the film centers on a love triangle between Guru Dutt, Rehman and Waheeda Rehman, and features music by Ravi. Farida Jalal is a guest appearance in the film, her debut. After a disastrous box-office performance of Kaagaz Ke Phool, this was a highly commercially successful and comeback movie for Guru Dutt. The movie saved Guru Dutt's home production studio from ruins. According the interview by V.K. Murthy the movie made profits of then what a 100 movies were to have made. Everyone were sure of the movie's success, however not to the levels movie grossed.
Though not directed by Guru Dutt, the movie has an unmistakable stamp of the maestro! Some of the songs have been immortalized by beautiful lyrics, music and cinematography and are as popular today as they were in the days this movie was released.

[edit] Plot
The setting is the city of Lucknow in northern India, where Islamic culture flourished. Two of the three best friends who live in this city have fallen in love with the same woman named Jameela unknowingly. Aslam (Guru Dutt) and Nawab (Rehman) are the two friends caught in this love triangle with Jameela (Waheeda Rehman). An integral part of any Guru Dutt film, comic relief was provided by Johnny Walker who plays Mirza Masaraddik Shaiza.
[edit] Critique
The director has very successfully and aptly brought the delicacy and character of early 1900s Lucknow, India. The team worked hard to each and every detail, in terms of costume, dialogs and mannerism of each character. There was never a doubt about success of this movie. Largely the credit goes to Guru Dutt who himself was known to have an eye for detail and would leave no expense left to get the best. It is rumored that color cinema was just filtering in India and Guru Dutt wanted to re-shoot the entire movie in color, however his financiers and distributors had lost patience. Guru Dutt was to compromise with the immortal title song in color! It is a treat to watch, a jewel from the treasure chest of the legend, Guru Dutt.
[edit] Music in the film
Famous songs from the film include the film's title song, "Mili Khaak Mein Mohabbat", "Sharma Ke Ye Kyu Sab Pardanashee", "Dil Ki Kahani Rang Layee Hain" and "Badle Badle Mere Sarkar".
The film also includes a song ("Chaudvin Ka Chand Ho") written by Shakeel Badayuni set to music by Ravi, and sung by Mohammed Rafi:
- चौदवीं का चांद हो, या आफ़ताब हो,
- जो भी हो तुम खुदा कि क़सम, लाजवाब हो
- ज़ुल्फ़ें हैं जैसे काँधे पे बादल झुके हुए
- आँखें हैं जैसे मय के पयाले भरे हुए
Translation:
- Are you the moon of the full-moon night, or are you the sun?
- What ever you are, I swear to God, you are incomparable!
- Your hair are like the clouds hanging over your shoulders
- And eyes! like cups of wine.
