Charonia lampas rubicunda, the knobbed triton is a subspecies of very large sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusc in the family Ranellidae, the tritons.

This subspecies is endemic to northern part of the North Island of New Zealand.

This large triton is found at shallow depths in coastal areas.

[edit] Shell description

The shell of Charonia lampas rubicunda is similar to that of Charonia lampas capax but with a shorter spire, broader body whorl, and finer, more regular, spiral cord sculpture, that is undiminished over the nodular keels.

The exterior shell coloration is pink to orange-brown, blotched, and tesselated on the cords in bright reddish-brown. The labial varix is strongly barred in reddish-brown.

The maximum shell height is 17 cm, and the maximum width is 11 cm.
