Charmes-Chambertin

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Charmes-Chambertin is a grand cru vineyard in the Côte de Nuits located near the town of Gevrey-Chambertin. The vineyard is known primarily for its Pinot noir production.[1] Located lower on the hillside near the Griotte-Chambertin and Chapelle-Chambertin crus, wines from this vineyard are known for being highly fragrant in their youth. With 77.5 acres (31ha) it is the largest grand cru in Gevrey-Chambertin.[2] Appellation d'origine contrôlée requirements include a minimum alcohol percent by volume of 11.5% and harvest yields of no more than 37 hl/ha.[3] Wines from this vineyard are known for the typicity character of the Pinot noir and its soft, ripe fruit flavors that typically peak between 10-20 years. The section of the vineyard closest to Route N74 is often considered closer to premier cru then Grand cru status. Mazoyeres-Chambertin (also Grand Cru) adjoins Charmes to the south and is generally (and legally) bottled under the Charmes-Chambertin designation.[4]
