Charmaine Hooper (born on January 15, 1968 in Georgetown, Guyana) is a former striker for the Canadian women's national soccer team. She is from Nepean, Ontario.
Hooper has played a total of 131 times and scored 71 goals for Canada, both national records (the second highest totals belong to Andrea Neil and Christine Sinclair, respectively). Her international debut came on July 7, 1986 against the United States. She was a member of the Canada squad at the 1995 and 1999 Women's World Cups.
A former star at North Carolina State University, she currently plays for the New Jersey Wildcats in the American W-League. Her previous clubs include the WUSA's Atlanta Beat, the Chicago Cobras, and the Rockford Dactyls; she has also played for club teams in Norway, Italy and Japan.
Hooper, Sharolta Nonen and Christine Latham were suspended in August, 2006 for not attending a training camp in Newfoundland. They were not invited to return to the team for the 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup competition in China. It is doubtful that Hooper will ever play for Team Canada again; however, she will always be remembered as one of Canada's best female or male soccer players ever. [1]
