[edit] History

The school was built in the community of West Royalty during the 1960s, north of the city limits. It was completely renovated in 1994 to its present configuration which saw a new cafeteria and specialist and instruction space added. In 1995, West Royalty was amalgamated into the city, however the name of the school was not changed.

The modern design of the school with its unusual angles and curves symbolizes the waves of the sea that surround the island.

[edit] Sports

The sports offered at Charlottetown Rural include basketball, rugby, soccer, track and field, volleyball, softball, field hockey, badminton, cross country, golf, and curling.

The Confederation City Classic is an annual basketball tournament hosted by the school which draws 24 teams competing from across the Maritime Provinces and sometimes further afield. 2008 will be the 25th year for the tournament and it will run from January 9 until January 12, 2008.

[edit] Musicals

Charlottetown Rural puts on a large musical production every second year(even year). Because of the cost Charlottetown Rural alternates each year with Colonel Gray High School to host the musical. The show can be seen on the mainstage theatre at the Confederation Centre of the Arts usually during the month of May.

Past Musicals:

  • 2008 - Back To The 80's
  • 2006 - Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella
  • 2004 - The Wiz
  • 2002 - Meredith Wilson's The Music Man

[edit] Giving Back

Every year the students and staff of CRHS take part in various fundraiser for Charities.

One annual project is Adopt A Family. This project takes place in December, homeroom classes are assigned a family, and given a list of what each member wants for Christmas. The students donate their own money and/or set up activities to raise money, then purchase the items that are on the lists. Each year dozens of families in PEI are able to have Christmas presents, and dinner because of this.

The school fundraised for the international charity Free The Children during the 2006-2007 school year.

In the 2007-2008 school year the Raider Council decided to raise money for the Children's Wish Foundation. On Friday, February 22, 2008 Charlottetown Rural High School will be hosting a Roast in honour of Chester Gillan. All proceeds from the Roast and Silent Auction will go to the Children's Wish Foundation to assist in the Raider Council's fund raising goal of granting a Wish to an Island child with a high-risk life-threatening illness. The Raider Council hopes to be able to provide the full cost of a wish with the money raised through the dinner and other small acitivites.
