The Charlotte County Redfish are a team of the South Coast League, based in Port Charlotte, Florida. The team is not affiliated with Major or Minor League Baseball. They play at the Charlotte Sports Park, but because reconstruction of the ball field to accommodate the Tampa Bay Rays spring training continues past schedule, the 2008 season has been suspended; the team has announced it will return in 2009[1].
The name "Redfish" refers to the redfish that is native to Florida's Gulf Coast waters. The name also appeals to both Charlotte and Port Charlotte high schools as the fish theme is related to the Charlotte High School Tarpons, but uses the red color of Port Charlotte High School.[2]
[edit] History
The team's first manager was Jackie Hernandez. He resigned in June 2006.
