The Charleston Daily Mail is an afternoon newspaper in Charleston, West Virginia. It historically featured a moderate to conservative viewpoint and described itself as an "independent Republican" newspaper.
The newspaper was in a Joint Operating Agreement with the owner of the morning paper, the Charleston Gazette from 1961 until 2004.
The Daily Mail was founded in 1914 by former Alaska Gov. Walter Clark and remained the property of his heirs until 1987, when Thomson Newspapers purchased it. In 1998, Thomson sold the Daily Mail to the Denver-based MediaNews Group. Then, in May 2004, MediaNews sold its economic interest in Charleston Newspapers to the Daily Gazette Company, the owners of the morning newspaper. The new owners almost immediately reduced the staff by a large margin and canceled its Saturday edition.
The Daily Mail now publishes Monday through Friday afternoons. On weekend mornings the Gazette staff publishes the combined Saturday Gazette-Mail and Sunday Gazette-Mail. Saturday's paper features two editorial pages, one from the Gazette editors and one from the Daily Mail editors, and comics pages from both newspapers.
The current JOA is being reviewed by the Department of Justice for violations of the antitrust act.
The newspaper has endorsed Hillary Clinton for president.
[edit] Awards
The Daily Mail has won awards in many fields. J.D. Maurice, its editor of many years until his retirement in 1978, won the Sigma Delta Chi award for editorial writing in 1958 and the Pulitzer Prize for distinguished editorial writing in 1975.
[edit] Motto
The newspaper's motto, as chosen by Gov. Clark, is "Without, or With, Offence to Friends or Foes, I Sketch Your World Exactly as It Goes."
