Charles Stetson

Charles Stetson was a United States Representative from Maine. He was born in New Ipswich, New Hampshire on November 2, 1801 He moved with his parents to Hampden, Maine in 1802. Stetson attended Hampden Academy and graduated from Yale College in 1823. He studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Hampden in 1826.
He was admitted to the bar of the United States Supreme Court in 1828, then held various local offices. He moved to Bangor in 1833. He was appointed judge of the Bangor Municipal Court 1834-1839. He was a member of the common council of Bangor in 1843 and 1844. He was a member of the State executive council 1845-1848. Stetson was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-first Congress (March 4, 1849-March 3, 1851).
He was an unsuccessful candidate for renomination to the Thirty-second Congress. He resumed the practice of his profession. He affiliated with the Republican Party in 1860, and died in Bangor March 27, 1863. His interment was in Mount Hope Cemetery.
