Charles St. George Cleverly (1819 - 1897-08-14;Chinese 基化厘 or 急庇利[1]) was the second Surveyor General in Hong Kong. He worked under Colonial Secretary and was responsible for public infrastructure, town planning and land auction.

Charles is famous for the construction of Government House. The construction began from October 1851 and finished in October 1955. [2]

Much of his name was registered in Hong Kong Government Gazette for public auction of crown land and buildings.

Cleverly Street in Sheung Wan of Hong Kong is named after him.[3]

Charles was born in Kiilworth of County Cork in Ireland. But it is believed that he is not a native Irish. According to his will, normal native place is Collingham Place, South Kensington, Middlesex in England.[1]

Charles was the grandson of William Cleverly who owned a shipyard beside River Thames in London. He had built many large fleet for British East Indian Company.[4]

Charles had a brother named Osmund Cleverly who had been working in Hong Kong.[5]

Charles had sons. One of them is Osmund Somers Cleverly, the Principal Private Secretary of Prime Ministers Stanley Baldwin, and Neville Chamberlain. Another is Peter Cleverly who is an architect.[4]

He died in Manley Castle, Upton On Severn, Worcester in England.[1]
