Schreiber was classical scholar and a Fellow of Trinity College Cambridge, where he was tutor to Ivor Guest. He married Guest’s mother Lady Charlotte Guest in 1855. She was the widow of John Josiah Guest, the owner of ironworks in Wales, and a major figure in the history of Welsh literature. They spent many years travelling in Europe collecting ceramics and other items.
Schreiber was elected as Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Cheltenham in 1865 but lost the seat in 1868. He was subsequently MP for Poole from 1880 until his death in 1884.
