Charles Lennox Richardson was the English merchant from Shanghai who was in Japan and was killed during the Namamugi Incident by the Satsuma retainers of Shimazu Hisamitsu on September 14, 1862. He had the bad luck to run into the party of that regent daimyo, the father of the actual daimyo (Shimazu Tadayoshi), going the other way on horseback, and he refused to dismount when the daimyo's party told him to. Therefore, the soldiers of the daimyo killed him with a sword and injured two other males in his group. His name as spelt by his father was Charles Lenox Richardson.
