At least six notable American football players are named Charles Johnson, three of whom played for the Buffaloes of the University of Colorado:
- Charles Johnson (defensive end), (1986- ), a defensive end for the Carolina Panthers.
- Charles Johnson (wide receiver) (1972- ), former wide receiver; Colorado Buffaloes, Pittsburgh Steelers, Philadelphia Eagles, New England Patriots, and Buffalo Bills.
- Charles S. Johnson (football), (1969- ), former backup quarterback for the Colorado Buffaloes and more recently an Assistant Athletic Director at Colorado and a radio sports commentator.
- Charley Johnson (1938- ), former quarterback; New Mexico State University, St. Louis Cardinals, Houston Oilers, and Denver Broncos.
- Charlie Johnson (offensive tackle), (1984- ), offensive tackle; Oklahoma State University and Indianapolis Colts.
- Charlie Johnson (nose tackle), (1952- ), former nose tackle; Colorado Buffaloes, Philadelphia Eagles, and Minnesota Vikings.
