Charles James Briggs

Major-General Sir Charles James Briggs KCMG, KCB, GOC (born 1865, Hylton Castle, Durham, died 1941) was a British soldier.

[edit] Early life and career

  • 30 January 1886: Commissioned in the 1st Dragoon Guards
  • 1892–1893: ADC to the GOC Egypt
  • November 1894–April 1897: Adjutant 1st Dragoon Guards
  • 1897–1899: Brigade Adjutant 4th Cavalry Brigade
  • 1899–1900: Brigade Major 3rd Cavalry Brigade. Briggs was wounded at the Battle of Magersfontein.
  • 1901–1902: Commanded 1st Imperial Light Horse
  • May 1905–May 1908: Commanded Transvaal Volunteers. Took part in suppressing the Bambatha Rebellion (Natal Native Rebellion) in 1906.
  • July 1904: Transferred to the 6th Dragoons
  • May 1908–November 1910 On half-pay
  • November 1910–May 1913: Commanded the South-East Mounted Brigade. Briggs commanded the Blue cavalry in the Army Manoeuvres of 1912.

  • August 1914–May 1915: 3rd Cavalry Brigade to France
  • May–October 1915: Commanded 3rd Cavalry Division
  • October 1915–May 1916: Commanded 28th Division in Salonika
  • May 1916–February 1919: Commanded XVI Corps.

  • February 1923: Retired from the army with the rank of lieutenant-general.
  • 16 March 1926 – 31 December 1939: Colonel, King's Dragoon Guards
