Charles Herbert Joyce

Charles Herbert Joyce (January 30, 1830 - November 22, 1916) was a U.S. Representative from Vermont.

Born near Andover, England, JoyceImmigrated to the United States in 1836 with his parents, who settled in Waitsfield, Vermont. He attended Northfield Academy and Newbury Seminary. He studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1852 and commenced practice in Northfield, Vermont. State librarian for two years. He served as district attorney for Washington County in 1857 and 1858. During the Civil War served in the Union Army as major and lieutenant colonel of the Second Vermont Volunteers. He resumed the practice of law in Rutland, Vermont. He served as member of the State house of representatives 1869-1871 and served as speaker in 1870 and 1871.

Joyce was elected as a Republican to the Forty-fourth and to the three succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1875-March 3, 1883). He was not a candidate for renomination in 1882. He resumed the practice of his profession in Rutland, Vermont. Later retired and resided in Pittsfield, Vermont, until his death, November 22, 1916. He was interred in Greenwood Cemetery, Rutland, Vermont.
