Charles Hargens

Charles Hargens (b.1894 d 1997) painted covers for the Saturday Evening Post, Colliers, Country Gentleman, Farm Journal, Boy's Life, the Open Road for Boys and about 300 books including the Zane Grey western novels of the 1930s and 1940s. His work is similar to that of Frederick Remington. Mr. Hargens was born in South Dakota, the son of a country doctor. He later studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and settled in Solebury Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania in 1940. His work is easily identified by the stylized and exaggerated lowercase g in his last name.

For many years, he was also active in the Pennsylvania state organization Boy Scouts of America and sponsored troop 64.
