Charles Gifkins

Charles John Gifkins was a first class cricketer who played two matches for Yorkshire County Cricket Club in 1880.

A right handed batsman, he made his debut against Surrey CCC at the Oval in August. Opening the innings with George Ulyett he scored a career best 23 in his first knock, putting on 71 for the first wicket. Ullett went on to post 141 as Yorkshire piled up 398 and won by an innings and 123 runs. His second, and final game, was the following match against Middlesex at Bramall Lane, Sheffield which was less successful all round. He scored 7 and a duck and the visitors won by 6 wickets. In all he scored 30 runs at 10 and took a catch, William Ford off the bowling of Tom Emmett in the Middlesex match for a duck.

He was born on February 19, 1856 in Thames Ditton, Surrey but the details of his death are not known. His right arm fast bowling was not called upon in the first class game.
