Dr. Charles E. Coates is the former head football coach of the Louisiana State University football team. Dr. Coates is remembered as being the first head coach in the history of program, losing the only game he ever coached in 1893 to Tulane University, 34-0.

Dr. Coates was also a well respected academic, becoming only the third faculty member with a PhD in LSU's history. He is known worldwide for his work in sugar chemistry research and he served as the dean of the Audubon Sugar School.

The Charles E. Coates Memorial Fund at LSU is named after him, as is Coates Hall, a building on LSU's campus.
